Hello! Just interested in seeing if you have any suggestions…

We have a very sweet, happy, active 10-month old girl. She is a great baby, but takes a long time to fall asleep for naps and even longer at bedtime. She breastfeeds (or takes bottles of breastmilk 3 days/week when I work) at least 24 oz per day and does great with 3 meals of solid foods, which she eats with us. We have a simple bedtime routine of dinner, change diaper/pajamas, breastfeeding with a story, pray, song, and bed. Sometimes she starts rubbing her eyes, other times she does not, but this does not change the length of time it takes her to fall asleep.

Her room has blackout curtains (though is still a bit bright because of daylight savings time!) and a white noise sound machine. She stars sobbing as soon as we set her in the crib and cries for 30-60 minutes. If she is just fussing/quiet crying, we let her be. If she is very upset, we go in every 15 min or so, and rub her back/calm her down, but as soon as we walk out she stars sobbing again. Often she pulls up to stand in her crib but sometimes is lying down and crying.

Generally she wakes up around 6am, naps around 9a and 1 or 2p, and we put her down around 7p. We have been letting her cry it out for 4 months!! There was some improvement but then daylight savings set us back again. Any tips? We are at a loss!

    Thanks so much!!

Also just a note— she usually sleeps through the night!

Thanks for the post! Your site is my go-to for all my baby questions!

I’m curious about my 10 month old. She sleeps well at night, usually waking at 5 am for a quick feed and she’s back down until 8:00 when she wakes for the day. She recently transitioned to a longer wake time, 3ish hours. I usually nurse when she wakes up (for the day and after naps), and I try to feed her at our family’s meal times. This puts meals two hours before naps. Should she be able to go that long without eating and still fall asleep well? I’ve been nursing at the beginning of our nap routine (about 10-15 minutes before she goes down) to “top her off” and hopefully avoid a sleep association. My concern is that I’m wanting to wean her in the next 8 weeks (we have baby #2 due in 14 weeks) and I’m wondering if consolidating her liquid intake before hand would make that transition easier.

So my son has been on the same schedule since he was about 3/4 months old. He is now 10 months and we just switched him from 3 naps to 2. He still has an 8oz bottle of forumla (doesn’t always finish) 5x a day…every 3 hours!! He used to wake up at 7am than it went to 6am than 530 now it’s 445! I need to get ready for work in the morning so I will go in put in his passifier and he stays there awake just laying there looking around. Once in a blue moon will fall back asleep for about 20min. Help! Current schedule:

    445-530am – wake
    630am – 8oz forumla
    7am – breakfast
    930am – 8oz bottle
    10am – nap (45min-hour)
1pm – 8oz bottle (first time today gave lunch and snack in place of bottle hoping to keep that up)
    1:30pm – lunch
    2:30pm – nap (30min-hr)
    4pm – 6oz bottle
    5pm – dinner
    6:30pm – bottle/bedtime routine
    7pm – sleeping

Until last week he used to take a quick half hour nap around 8am because he’s so tired from waking early! But I figure he’s so close to a year old he should only need two naps a day!

@Hayley – Thank you for stopping by our sleepy little village and for sharing with us. Nap time schedules can be quite challenging for sure -especially at this age. Yes, we do generally see many 10-month olds on a 2-nap schedule but it definitely doesn’t mean they all “have” to be for sure. The early waking can definitely wreak havoc with sleep for the rest of the day and night – it’s one of those cycles that can be difficult to break. You should check out this article for tips on helping with such early waking: https://www.babysleepsite.com/how-we-sleep/baby-waking-too-early/ and/or consider connecting with one of our expert sleep consultants for more one-on-one help. Hi!

My 9.5 month old still breastfeeds (or while at daycare gets bottles) 5 times a day in total. I pump 3 times at work for her bottles of 3.5 ounces each. Our pediatrician said keep things as they are and try to increase solids. I am always told babies can’t overfeed on breastmilk and I enjoy feeding her but I would like to get the feedings down to 4 times and also delay the feeding in the morning to be closer to 7. Would also love to get her naps more consistent in length. Any recommendations?

    Here is her schedule:
    6AM Breastfeed
    7AM Breakfast
    9:30/10 Nap (anywhere from 30min to 1.5hrs)
11AM pumped Bottle 3.5 oz (at daycare)
    12:30PM lunch
2:30PM pumped Bottle 3.5 oz (at daycare)
2:45PM Nap (anywhere from 30min to 1 hr)
4:30PM pumped Bottle 3.5 oz (at daycare)
    6PM dinner
7PM Breastfeed and go down for the night

    Thank you!
    Bernadette

    Hi I really need help.

I have a 10month little girl who used to sleep 13hours at night with 1 short waking at 5am to feed.

    Her schedule now:

Anywhere between 3am and 6am she wakes for breast feed and may take up to an hour to fall back asleep lately.

    Wakes up 740am

    Breakfast 8am

    Breastfeed 930am plus/minus snack

    Nap 1030-1130 or 11 – 12 if we’ve been out to a baby class.

    Lunch anytime between 1130am -1pm

    Breastfeed 130/2pm plus snack later

    Nap 3-4pm

    Dinner 430/5pm

    Bedtime routine 6pm

    Breastfeed 630pm

    Asleep by 645/7pm

She used to sleep till at least 5/6am and then I would breastfeed and she would go back to sleep till 745am. Nowadays she seems to wake earlier and earlier and harder to put back to sleep. I am not sure if when she wakes at 3am do i try and put her back to sleep till at least 5am before i feed her?

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Rohini Patel, thank you for your comment. I am sorry you’ve been experiencing early wakings with your daughter. Here is a link to an article with reasons you may be experiencing it: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-waking-too-early/
At this age most babies can sleep through the night, but some babies do better with one feeding to get them through to the morning (this was the case with my son). She may still need the feeding or she may be waking out of a habit. If the frequency begins to increase, it is likely it’s become a habit. If this happens, you can refer to this article on sleep associations to see her dependency on you: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-association/ and you may find this article series helpful as it takes you through various sleep training techniques: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-training-from-no-cry-to-cry-series-part-1/
When she wakes at night (for feeding or not) I would make the interaction as quick and boring as you can, to subtly remind her this is not social time! 🙂 If you are doing any diaper changes try to use the least amount of light as possible.
I hope this helps, thank you for using the Baby Sleep Site as a resource for sleep!

    10+mo at daycare
    – beginner walker
    – feeds himself with a spoon
    – can sort shapes
    – drinks from straw, sippy cup, and regular cup
    – bf and HIPP hypoallergetic formula

    schedule (currently)
wake up : anywhere between 4-6:30
bf in bed or bottle at that time
sometime he goes back to sleep until 7:00
    8:00 daycare
    8:30 breakfast
    10:00 bottle -> nap
    11:30 lunch
    1:00 bottle / high chair
    2:30 snack
    3:00 nap
    4:30 bottle / high chair
    5:45-6:00 pickup
    6:30 dinner
    7:00/7:30 bath
7:45/8:00 bottle in high chair -> crib
sometimes he wakes up at 2/3 am

does he need a straight 10-12 hours?
he usually gets 9-10, but not sure how to help him not wake up for the entire time. Would love to put him down at 8pm and have him wak up at 7am.

    Thoughts?

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Lisa, thank you for sending your son’s schedule over! He sounds like such a smart boy! 🙂
At this age we would consider 1 night waking to be normal, although many babies can sleep through the night at this age. (My son needed a feeding until around his first birthday). In a 24 hour period he needs about 11-12 hours of sleep at night and 2-2 1/2 hours of sleep during the day split between two naps. For his night time sleep, it is okay if he still needs one feeding, but I would suggest treating the super early wake ups as a night waking, rather than him getting up for the day (this is referencing any days he gets up before 6am). You may try bringing his bedtime back a bit earlier, closer to 7 and see if that changes anything (sounds counter productive but going to bed earlier often does wonders so he is not going to sleep initially so overtired). You will want to bring it back gradually if he does not seem tired at 7 yet, in 15 minute increments getting earlier every few days.
I hope you being to see his night time sleep get on more of a pattern for you and have his night time sleep lengthen out! Thank you for stopping by and using the Baby Sleep Site as a resource!

Please help my baby is nearly 10 months and for a long time now (couple of months) he wakes very early every morning, usually around 4am most days. His schedule roughly is the following:

Early morning BM feed when wakes
    7am breakfast
9.30am ish morning nap anything between 1-2 hours
    10.30/11 ish first bottle
    12 lunch
2.30 half an hour nap (always only short nap here)
    5pm dinner
    6pm bath
7pm always asleep by this time.

He sleeps 90% of the time through the night without any disturbance but always wakes very early, what can we do?

    • Janelle Reid says

@Leila, Thank you for writing to us! I am so sorry to hear you are struggling with such early mornings with your little guy. It does look like he isn’t getting quite enough sleep in a 24 hour period (because of the early wakings) which could be causing the early wakings! It’s a pretty awful cycle that can happen when babies get overtired. Here is a link to an article with tips on how to handle the early waking: https://www.babysleepsite.com/how-we-sleep/baby-waking-too-early/ And here is an article about breaking the cycle of being overtired: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/overtired-baby/

Hello my 10month old boy is so random with his sleep at night its so unpredictable. Usually wakes anywhere between 05:30-07-30, if its 5:30 i bring him i bed with me for another hour or so. (1-2 times a week)
Breakfast between 8-9am cereal or porridge and formula.
Then play for a couple of hours.
Nap for anything between 30mins- 2hrs, around 10-10:30am. (Can take 45mins to get him asleep sometimes he constantly on the move and fights it by getting up and crawling around/standing with his eyes so droopy as hes so tyred can barely hold himself up sometimes).
Has his lunch about 30mins after waking, (depends what time he wakes from nap) baby rice and veg or finger food and fruitpot or yoghurt and water.
Then plays some more for another 2hours then naps (depending how long the morning was) between 45mins-2hrs. Try not to let him sleep after 5pm, and between 2-3hrs total naptime.
Dinner between 4:30-5:30pm meat and vegetables with fruit or yoghurt.
Then bedtime routine starts between 7-7:30 (bath book bottle bed) he goes down fine but wakes up after 4hrs or sometimes sooner wining (not crying) try to ignore it and sometimes he goes off for another hour or so then wakes again, has formula then about 1am then winges for 30mins or so and finally drifts off to sleep. Could be til 5:30am or 7:30am?
Was sleep training/controlled crying for about 6weeks in total and he mastered self soothing by the end from over 1hour of crying to 5-10seconds by the end of the 6weeks. Now 3weeks later hes all over the place again.
Literally tried so many different things to help him sleep through and self settle.
He has slept through a handfull of times and the next day/night we do everything the same as previous but it doesnt work.
Any help advice/tips would be awesome. Thankyou.

My son is 10 and a half months and hasn’t slept through the night ever. I breastfeed about twice a day and he takes formula the rest of the time.
He wakes up about every 3 and a half hours and drinks a full bottle 180ml so i know he is hungry….when i try to just give water he cries so hard he may even throw up. He is used to falling asleep on my nipple …and if i lay him in his crib awake he cries.
Please help I’m losing my mind.

    • Janelle Reid says

@RSA Thank you for using the Baby Sleep Site as a resource for sleep help. I am so sorry that you are struggling with your son’s sleep! At this age most babies can sleep through the night on there own (although some do better with one top off feeding around 4 or 5am as the article mentions), but it sounds like your son may have a sleep association keeping him from sleeping longer stretches. He may also need some of those calories he’s consuming at night during the day so he gets all he needs – you’ll just have to determine that since I’m not sure what he’s getting throughout the day. Our schedule should help give you an idea on amounts.
Here is an article on sleep associations that may help describe a bit of what’s going on: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-association/

Just wanted to say thank you for all the information. For each month since I found your site (7-10 months) your help has been spot on and very helpful. We have a baby with health problems and once we got out of that phase we had no idea what to do because her schedule was so incredibly messed up. I think I refer back to your site on a weekly basis. Thanks again! Best wishes to you!
