Hello! I use Huckleberry sleep app which really crushed the 3 nursing associations. My almost 10month old is great at napping and going down. 1-1.5hour nap in AM 2.75 hours after waking, and after noon nap 1-1.5 hours 3.25 hours after AM nap. She goes down 3.5 hours after that. Great bedtime routine, falls asleep on her own, one dream feed between 9:30-10:30, but wakes between 3:30-5:30 for two months now and won’t go down without cuddling for 20-30 mins if at all. How do I fix these early morning wakings? She’s breastfed and eats really well. Loves spinach, kale, blueberries and strawberries. Any suggestions?

    • Neosha says

@Jess – Thank you for reading and for sharing with us! Early morning wakings can be tough to crack, for sure, especially as babies get older and more alert. There are so many different reasons that could be leading to the early waking though that you may be better served connecting with one of our sleep consultants for support. Even if the Huckleberry consultants couldn’t/didn’t help much, I’m confident we can. We have an entire e-Book related to early waking and our sleep consultants work with families every day to conquer early waking. Read more about our team here:https://www.babysleepsite.com/about Hang in there, Jess!

Hello- I have loved your website and have used it as reference several times. I’m currently wondering if my 10 month old is ready for one nap? He has been refusing naps and needing rocked to sleep to get even a 30 minute nap for the last week. He has also been waking several times at night, when he had previously been sleeping until 4-5am and then feeding and going back to sleep until 7am. He has no sleep associations, although we had coslept for a while, but haven’t for over a month and he had been doing pretty good with taking long naps and sleeping mostly through the night. I have tried different times in the morning for his first nap, 2.5-3.5 hours wake time and he just screams when I lay him in the crib as if he’s wide awake. Any suggestions? Thank you!

    • Neosha says

@Sarah – Thank you for reading and for sharing with us! We generally see the transition to one nap closer to 15-18 months but we’ve seen it happen in babies your son’s age. We’d first suggest working on his schedule and rocking “association” before moving in that direction. It’s important to note that many babies this age go through a period of development (physical and brain) that triggers a temporary sleep regression as well. You can consider connecting with one of our sleep consultants who are better trained to help you through this type of situation. You may even want to consider one of our 15-min free evaluations to get a better idea. You can read more about our team here:https://www.babysleepsite.com/about Hope this helps, Sarah – hang in there!

    • Danielle says

      Hi Faiza,
Thank you for visiting The Baby Sleep Site! In general, as long as your baby is getting enough sleep and is growing well and happy, you will be fine 🙂 Many families we’ve worked with have had to adapt the suggested schedule to work with their work schedules, traveling, etc., and almost anything can work as long as the baby has enough night sleep and is napping well. We do have a chart to help you figure out if he’s getting enough sleep here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-sleep-needs/baby-toddler-bedtime-chart/
(Ignore the “Bedtimes” column and just look at the “Total sleep hours”.)
I hope this helps, but please let us know if you have any other questions!

Hi there, I absolutely loved this article, I’m currently trying to remove my 10month old’s feed to sleep association, it’s definitely improving. Thank you for the recommended servings and the example schedules, I will be using them. I’m from Australia so you can know that your article has come over here. There is a lot of differing info out there even between doctors.

Hi @Lisa – Thank you for writing! We are SO happy to hear that our resources and information have been helpful for your family! Thank you again for taking the time to let us know, and we wish you all the best!

Hi there, my 10months only nap for 30mins every nap since birth. I tried gentle tap to encourage falling back asleep but he refuses.
We have been sleep training him and he has no problem falling asleep on his own. But keep waking up at night every 2-3hours to feed.
What would be the best thing to do?

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Yolinda Indrawan, I’m so sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling with short naps and frequent wake ups from your son. We would love to help. I do think since you’re struggling with naps and nights that you would also benefit from working with a trained sleep consultant who can look at a full sleep history of your child and create a step by step plan of action to you, according to what your priority list of goals would be as well. If you’re interested, we have an amazing team that can help and you can see the different options to work with them here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-toddler-sleep-consulting-services/

    • Debbye @ The Baby Sleep Site says

Hi @Crystal! Thank you for writing us, and we would love to help! It sounds like your little ones have not quite mastered the skill of going back to sleep when they wake at night or go through a light sleep cycle at 1am and 4am. You may want to work on teaching them to fall asleep independently, and here is a link to an article that may help:

Hi there my baby will be 10 months on Sept 29th . he wakes at 7am and fights the first nap at 10am. We will fall asleep at 11am without a fight and then sleep for 1 hour and then sleep 3.5 hours later for 1 more hour. Should I insist on the 10am nap….he ia not tired at allnand just plays in the crib and eventually cries.

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Temika, thank you for visiting the Baby Sleep Site! I’m sorry to hear your little guy has been fighting his morning nap. If the adjusted time is working for him better, then I would say go for it and see how he does with it, or if he’s acting tired maybe adjust the time a little earlier so he doesn’t get over tired (that’s always the main concern with pushing naps for later is that they’ll get overtired and then fight you even more). Here is a link to download our free guide with nap tips that may offer more insight: https://www.babysleepsite.com/free-baby-nap-guide/

  9. Preksha says

Hi.. my daughter is 10.5 months old and is fighting the first nap. I’ve been putting her down and leaving her in the crib but she just plays.she was taking two naps – every three hours of waking. So woke at 6, nap 1 at 9-10:30 then nap 2 from 2-3:15 and then bed time at 6-6:15.

Now she wakes up at 6;30 and sleeps 6:15-6:30 nand is refusing nap 1.. I moved nap 2 early by 30 mins but how do I get her to sleep again? Is she transitioning?

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Preksha, thanks for writing to us! I am sorry you’ve been struggling with your daughter’s first nap. Around this age there is a little regression that hits (there’s 1 around 9 months and another around a year) that could be causing the fight. Most babies do not go down to one nap until they are between 15-18 months old on average, so I personally would continue to offer the first nap and it is likely she will start taking it again. I hope this helps!

  10. Melanie says

My son just turned 10 months. For the past few weeks, he’s been waking in the early morning to feed – any time between 4-6 am. Our normal wake time is 7. As you can see, the early morning feed time is quite inconsistent. Should I try to keep it at a consistent time, which would mean setting my alarm and feeding? Or should I just let this continue as it’s been going, and just let him wake himself up?

FYI I have a 34-month old as well who is a light sleeper even with a white noise machine and a fan going, so I don’t let the baby cry for too long.

    • Debbye @ The Baby Sleep Site says

Hi @Melanie – Thank you for writing to us, and I am sorry to hear how early your 10 month old is waking! We know how tough schedules can be!! I do not see a need to wake him to feed him, and if you are “okay” with allowing him to wake himself up and feed him at that time, then feel free to let things continue as they are. We do applaud you for doing what works best for you and your family! This may be a great resource for you too: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-waking-too-early/
