    Hi,

I am going to try this schedule. How do you suggest I start since he is on a different schedule? He still wakes up at least once a night and I feed him and dr said he’s not hungry. I think it’s because he goes to bed so late around 9.

You can’t say 9pm is late at any time. 9pm isn’t late if he wakes up late too. My baby is 6 months and goes to bed at 9pm because of our work schedule and she wakes up at 8am. So that’s a good 11 hours sleep and she’s happy the whole day. So please don’t recommend early nighttime as a general rule. Every family is different. It all depends on what time the baby can wake up

      • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Anna, thanks for writing to us! We totally agree with you – all families are different and our mission at Baby Sleep Site is to work with families and what works for them and making sure everyone is sleeping well! I couldn’t find the exact comment you were replying to as there are so many, so I apologize, but I am assuming Debbye was just sharing with you what we’ve found in our years of experience most babies do best with, which is a 7-7 schedule (or something in that range). Again, we totally recognize that there is an exception to every rule and we are always happy to tell people to tweak the sample schedule to their wake up time and don’t want to force a family to change something that is working just fine for them. Thanks for sharing and visiting the Baby Sleep Site!

I want to find out… My baby use ti drink 5 hours between each feed at night he is 6 monthe now en drink about every 4 hours in between… When i want him to sleep through does he have to drink during the night… And what time is the best time for hin to go to bed at night

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Danelle, thanks for writing to us. Above you will see the sample schedule that gives you a good guideline of how much the baby should be waking at night, and what the recommend bedtime range is (usually babies do best in the 7 o’clock range but may differ slightly). A few wake ups at night are ok, but if they get really close together (every 2 or 3 hours) then it may be an issue of a sleep association. To get help with getting your baby to sleep longer stretches, be sure to download our free guide with tips for that here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-through-night-free-ebook/
I hope that helps! If you need anything else, please let us know!

These schedules are great, but it looks like they’re aimed at sahms and not moms who rely on daycare throughout the day. Unfortunately staying at home or working less than 40 hours per week isn’t an option and neither is a nanny. I’m just wondering what kind of scheduling options there are for babies who are gone for most of the day and whose schedules have to be flexible (our son is the youngest in his infant day care. All the other babies are around a year old to 18 months) – so he needs the most care, but the providers’ time has to be split so his day can vary. Are there things we can aim for that are more flexible? Or ways we can structure the hours we do have at home based on what the daycare has done throughout the day? It’s really really hard to not have control over your baby’s schedule and to also not find any resources that address your needs. Thanks!

    • Neosha says

@Tiff – Thank you for reading through our schedule and for sharing. I’ve forwarded your feedback to our editorial team! We generate these schedules to be more of a general guideline or sample so parents or care providers have an example to use when creating their own. Our sleep consultants regularly work one-on-one with parents who have more specific needs, such as daycare scheduling as these are generally fairly unique to the family and won’t work as well posted out on the blog as they’ll only apply to that family. We do have some articles for managing daycare schedules (https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-naps-2/daycare-nap-schedules-2-tips/) and one for childcare providers, too, if you’d like to share it with your care provider: https://www.babysleepsite.com/childcare-resources/ Please consider connecting with one of our expert sleep consultants who will be able to help you develop a sleep schedule that works for your family – you can read more about our lovely ladies here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/about Hang in there, Tiff.

I’m confused. Every article I’ve read is in support of formula or breast milk as primary nutrition. During my son’s 6 month check up the pediatrician said he was underweight (14.4) and that formula needs to take a backseat to solids. Somebody please unscramble my brain.

    • Neosha says

@James Moore – Thank you for reading and for commenting. It can be quite confusing when you read one thing and hear something else from a variety of people, including your primary care doctor. We completely understand what you’re feeling but allow that everyone is entitled to their thoughts – we’re in the camp of breast milk and/or formula for the first year. However, your 6 month old baby will need more and more calories as he grows so you’ll want to be sure to balance his formula with his solids appropriately. If you’re uncomfortable with the advice of your son’s pediatrician, we encourage you to seek a 2nd opinion as well. Best of luck, James. Hang in there!

  5. Christine says

My boy will be 6 months on the 12th and since about 5 months he has been battling any kind of third nap entirely. His two other naps are definitely consolidating and he’ll take a nap around 830/9 and 12/1, each nap being around 1.5 – 2 hours, and he goes down very easy for both of those.

    Schedule:

    Wake Up: 6am
    Nap 1: 830am nap (~1.5-2 hours)
    Nap 2: 1pm (~1.5-2 hours)
    Bedtime 530/6

Issue is this: He got two teeth and then got a cold and is definitely going through a growth spurt and for almost two weeks now, he’s been waking up every 2-3 hours at night, and if he wakes around 4/5 in the morning…. he will NOT go back to sleep and will fuss/play/cry until I go in to get him at 6 am.

Before the teeth and the cold, he was only waking up ONCE! Maaaybe twice the odd time.

Also I WOULD love and prefer a 7-7 schedule but he hardly ever sleeps till 7am, even if he goes to bed later, and I have no idea how to adjust this… or if I just need to get used to it. It’s more that my husband feels like he gets zero time with the baby when he gets home from work, and a 530/6 bedtime sometimes interferes with eating dinner and I’m sick of resorting to take out because its faster than cooking.

Lastly, in other groups, people have told me to shorten wake times AND shorten his naps to force a third nap. I tried this, and he was crying basically all the time. He would cry when I would forcibly wake him up and cry when I would try to put him down at the 2 hour mark. Sure he’d take a third nap usually… but he didn’t seem happy at all and every nap turned into a battle with shorter wake times so I gave up. My guy is definitely on a 2-nap schedule but he’s just been waking up a lot at night and waking early.

    • Janelle Reid says

@Christine, oh man!!! I am so sorry to hear things have been so rough lately. It is crazy how much teething and a cold can change so much. It does sound like you may need to make some adjustments to his schedule and he may need to re-learn falling asleep on his own again since he’s been waking so frequently. 🙁 Here is a link to a free guide that will give you tips to help your baby sleep through the night (or in your case back to 1-2 wake ups which is perfectly fine at his age): https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-through-night-free-ebook/

  6. Hailey says

    Hi,

My girl just turned 6 months. Rolling over started and now she prefers to sleep on her belly.

For over 2 months , maybe even closer to 3 months , my baby was on a very predictable natural nap & sleep cycle. So natural that even on a vacation in a different time zone she took her naps naturally at the time she would at home and fell asleep at the same time exactly with no variation .

She would wake up around 6:30-7
    She would have 2x 45 minute naps at 10 & 2
I was going on a 3 hour awake cycle .
And be asleep in bed at 6 (this bedtime plays a huge role in my happiness too lol)
She always fell asleep on her own and went to bed while awake and had a sleep onset of 3-5minutes

All of a sudden last week she can roll and now is taking much longer naps.
    She changed overnight.
The first nap has almost triples to 2-2.5 hours and the second can be 1 or more hours/ unpredictable. It seems like too much because of how happy she was on the 2, 45 min naps a day schedule .

Now she is grunting and seems whiny

she seems like she is too excited to go to sleep at night and I don’t even know how to keep he bedtime the same when she was so happy the way it was before .

I want her bedtime 6pm- and I haven’t experimented with cutting out the second nap.

    • Neosha says

@Hailey – Thank you for stopping by our sleepy little village and for commenting! Many 6 month olds do start consolidating their naps at this age. This article should help you better determine how many naps she may need so you can work on the timing (if needed) to get to a better day: https://www.babysleepsite.com/naps/6-month-old-baby-naps-how-many/ Hope this helps, Hailey. My son is 5.5 months old is not a good sleeper since the 4 month sleep regression. He requires bouncing or feeding to sleep and in the day he needs to be held or me to lay next to him to get any sort of decent nap. At night he has trouble self soothing and wakes often to be picked up and will fall back asleep.

This I could manage but now he has thrown himself into a new routine of a crazy early bed time.

    530am awake
    7 to 8 nap
    1030 to 1130 nap
    130 to 230 nap
    430/5 bed

I have tried stretching out his last nap to start later, but he always wakes at 230. he can only happily stay awake for 2 to 2.5 hours before the crying starts. He will also only nap for 1 hour MAX 1.5 if I’m lucky. I have no clue what to try to get him back to a 7pm bed time since dropping this cat nap. I also tried letting him wake up when he went through a sleep cycle at about 6pm but he wasnt having it. Just screamed to be put back to sleep.

Any suggestions on how to get back into a better routine. 430 bed is too early. He dies his good stretch of sleep (4hours) but I can’t take advantage of it.

  8. Alli says

    Hello,
I have a 6 month old who is a 30-minute napper. I try to follow these schedules but since he only naps for 30 min he is either up for too long or taking too many naps. The issue with too many naps is that he will not take a 4th nap in his crib. He cries to the point of making himself throw up. The only way he’ll take the 4th nap is if he is in the car but I’d rather not have to drive somewhere every day at that time.
He goes to bed between 6-7 depending on his naps and we don’t get him until 6:30am. I say we don’t get him because he tends to wake up around 4-5 and have a hard time going back to sleep. He doesn’t cry but just talks to himself, sometimes drifts off for 20-30 min then up again. We let him do this until 6:30. This has been going on for a few months now and it is exhausting.
He puts himself to sleep, uses white noise and black out curtains, he does use a pacifier but can put it in himself and usually will be holding it or have it in in the early morning while he’s laying there.

Here is the schedule I’ve been trying to stick to:
6:30am- wake up/6oz bottle of formula
    7:30am-breakfast
    8-8:30- nap
    9:30-6oz bottle
    10:30-11-nap
    12:30-6oz bottle
    1-1:30-nap
    3:30-6oz bottle
    4-I try a 4th nap here
    4:30-dinner solids
    6-6oz bottle
    6:30-bed
He will wake up around 4-5 and lay in his crib till 6:30, sometimes falling back asleep sometimes not

He is sometimes okay with longer wake time but if I put him in the car he will fall asleep and change the whole schedule. I would appreciate any advice!! Thank you!

    • Neosha says

@Alli – Thank you for stopping by our sleepy little village and for sharing with us. Mastering naps and schedules can be a tricky, tricky thing – more of an art than a science for sure. This is especially so when you’re dealing with early waking, too. Playing around with wake times and tweaking the schedule is usually a good place to start. You can read a few tips for early waking here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/how-we-sleep/baby-waking-too-early/ We have an e-Book devoted to Mastering Naps, which may be helpful – you can read more about it here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/mastering-naps/ Hang in there, Alli and good luck!

    • Katrina says

7:30 is too early in my opinion to be going to bed I follow the schedule and had the same problem however I started let my son take longer naps during the day and stay up until 9 we do belly time cuddles read a book before going to bed I do break down the bottles and spread them out a little more so that he still only gets 32 oz but it’s spread out till 9 maybe you could try that

    • Jen says

Hi there! Two long naps is good — sleep induces more sleep. Maybe let her sleep and push back her bedtime to 6:30? or 7? Do you have the app “The Wonder Weeks?” It will tell you so much about what is going on mentally and developmentally that really helps you hang in there! Also, for over a year, babies need two naps a day. Trying for one nap a day, in my opinion, would be not very beneficial to her brain development and nighttime sleep.

  9. Amy Lomnicky says

Your sample 1 schedule seems great and I’m going to try and get my 6 month old on a similar schedule. One problem I’m running into now is that she tends to want to sleep too long in the early evening nap. Should I be waking her up so that she is ready for bed around 7-7:30? Thanks!

    • Neosha says

@Amy – Thank you for stopping by our sleepy little village and for your comment. We’re so glad to hear you like the schedule! If she’s otherwise napping well during the day/night and waking consistently each morning, you may not need to modify the nap. If she’s not napping well or sleeping well at night, she could be trying to catch up on sleep during that last nap or if it’s starting too late in the afternoon, she could be treating it like an early bedtime, among other things. Waking her to get her on a better schedule, if that’s your goal, is possibly a short-term option. We’d need to know more details, unfortunately. See this article for more information on that topic- https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/should-you-wake-a-sleeping-baby/

One thing, though, is that the bedtime listed in the sample schedule is not a “firm” bedtime but a sample one used for illustration so please do not feel that you have to stick to the exact times listed there. At this age, you’d really want to stay flexible in your scheduling since wake times are still pretty short and naps can be, as well. It’s a great idea to develop a structure for her schedule though for consistency, especially starting with her wake time each morning – this will really help set the tone of the day for naps and bedtime.

I hope this helps, Amy. Thanks again for stopping by – please keep reading!

My guy is 6 months and he wakes from 3-4 times a night with his longest stretch being 3-4 hrs. He goes down for naps and bedtime by himself but cannot be soothed in the middle of the night.
    This is his schedule:
    7- wake up and nurse
    8-830- solids
    9- nap 1 hr
    10 nurse
    11-1130 solids
    1230-1 nap 45mins- 1hr
    1-130 nurse
    330-4 nap 30-45mins
    5 nurse
    6-630 solids
7 nurse and bedtime routine asleep by 730
Just curious if this is ok or is something off? Thanks!

    • Janelle Reid says

@Ashley – Thank you for writing to us! I am sorry your son is waking up so much at night. At 6 months, we would generally expect 1-2 wake ups for feedings at night to be normal. Anything above that is usually a sign that there is a sleep association preventing him from going back to sleep on his own as he goes through a lighter sleep cycle. Here is a link to an article about sleep associations for more information: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-association/
His daytime schedule looks great though so I don’t think it’s an issue of him being over tired. As he continues to grow and become more active, you may need to increase the amount of food he eats, and if you need any help with that, be sure to check out our sister site, Start Baby on Solids: https://www.babysleepsite.com/

If you do come to discover the extra wakings are due to a sleep association, you may find looking through this series article helpful should you decide to do any sleep training with him (it sounds like you’ve done it for his initial bedtime but he’s struggling with the wake ups): https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-training/sleep-training-from-no-cry-to-cry-series-part-1/

I hope this helps, but let us know how it turns out and if you need anything else! Thanks for using the Baby Sleep Site as a resource for sleep!
