Hello! My baby loves to roll over but he just seems to want to do “tummy time” (with his arms propping up bus chest and head) when he rolls to his belly in his crib. He loves tummy time so I’m guessing he just thinks it’s play time. Any advice to get him to relax on his belly and sleep that way since he just keeps rolling over if I put him back on his back?

Hi @Angie, thanks for visiting the Baby Sleep Site! I’m glad to hear your 4 month old loves tummy time but am sorry it’s also loved in the middle of the night! 😉 I know it seems like it never will, but this too shall pass. It may be a couple of weeks where you are having to roll him back to sleep, but he will eventually be able to roll himself back or will settle there. I don’t know if you have tried, but if you left him there, would he play for a long time? Or would he start fussing? Just a thought if he ended up settling on his own and didn’t fuss for you, as long as he’s strong enough to roll both ways and he is not swaddled then tummy sleep would be okay. I hope this helps and he figures it out soon!

My 10 week old son sleeps in a halo basinette with a newborn insert. I wanted to wean him from the basinette to the crib, so I took the insert out last night. He was swaddled and this morning when I woke up he was on his belly. I of course freaked out, I flipped him back onto his back and he immediately rolled onto his belly again. I put the newborn insert back in the basinette so he didnt have any room to roll over, my question is do I wean him from being swaddled or do I go cold turkey and leave him unswaddled, he is too small and young for the zipadeezip he’s only 9 pounds. Also do I need to put him in the crib right away or can he stay in the halo with the insert?

    • Janelle Reid says

Hi @Janine, thanks for writing to us – what a strong little guy you have! I am honestly not 100% sure on all of the weight requirements on the products you’ve mentioned, so I would be sure to check with the manufactures guidelines to decide if you want to transition him out of the Halo right away or not. For swaddling, I will let you know that that is the same age I decided to transition my boys as well! I mostly did it because I knew it would be easier if they got use to sleeping without it then, rather than waiting until they were a couple months old and dependent on it. I’m sorry I can’t give you a clear answer of what to do exactly, but I’d go with your instincts and make sure he is safe and hopefully he will transition quickly. Let us know how it turns out and if you need any more help!

    Hello,

I have an 8 mo. She just recently started rolling onto her stomach to sleep. She does in as soon as I put her down. This is a concern for me and has been destroying what little sleep I get. She just won’t stay on her back. She is able to move from front to back or vice versa, still this concerns me. Any advice out there?

    • Neosha says

@Colby – Thank you for reading and for sharing with us. Rolling over can be such fun to watch and to experience with your baby but boy can it be frustrating when it bleeds over into sleep! Though Back-to-Sleep is advised for babies, many babies find a preferential way to sleep as they develop gross motor and rolling skills and this could be your daughter’s! Please check with her healthcare provider to be sure this is a safe way for her, specifically, to continue to sleep and for your peace of mind. Hang in there, Colby!

    Hello-
We room share with our 8-month old. She used to sleep ok in a co-sleeper, but we are now having problems getting her to sleep in her crib. She is a light sleeper and wakes herself up when she rolls onto her tummy. She immediately gets into crawling position and cries (she’s learning to crawl).

We can usually start her off in the crib for a couple of hours, but my husband brings her into bed and holds her to sleep. How can I get her to sleep in her crib? She won’t nap there at all in the day and takes short naps in the swing.

    Thank you!

My 5 day old arches his back and rolls on his side in the bassinet. What can I do to keep him from rolling over? Should I not swaddle him?

    • Debbye @ The Baby Sleep Site says

Hi @Patricia – Thank you for writing to us, and congratulations on your new baby boy!! It is hard to say without knowing your bay, his swaddle, etc, so you may want to check with your doctor about his sleep position, and his swaddle, to make sure that it is developmentally appropriate and safe for him.
At 5 days old a swaddle is typically a good thing that will help him rest, but safety is first, so do make sure that his pediatrician says that the swaddle is safe for his age, and the sleep position as well. Good luck and congrats again!

My baby is 6 months and she prefers sleeping on belly or side but mostly belly and she ends up turned differently than when I laid her down (yeah went from top to near the middle and side of crib). I worry a lot, but she’s been sleeping through the night again ever since she started this this week (4 1/2 months-5 1/2 months she slept through night but stopped till now) should I roll her over? Is this safe?

my 4 month old baby rolls over from back to belly at night, am having nightmares and cant sleep coz i turn him everytime and he turns back to belly and sleeps longer. help, am realy scared.

    • Debbye @ The Baby Sleep Site says

Hi @Saphia – Thanks for writing! We do understand how nervous a newly rolling baby can make a parent! If you have read all of the tips on this blog post, hopefully they will help you feel a bit better! Practicing rolling back to his back during awake times may help it translate to night, which will heopfully help you feel better. Please also talk to your baby’s Doctor about his specific development and needs. This should give you more info, peace of mind, and help you decide how to handle this short stage! Hang in there Saphia! You are not alone!!

My almost 10 month old hasnt napped more than 30 min in 3 weeks. CIO turns into throwing up/cleaning so it does not work. He rolls over and is immediately in crawling position or pulling himself up. We room share until im too tired then we bed share and I started giving him formula before bed just because I wasnt sure if hes waking up hungry and I needed to rule out not making enough breastmilk. He wakes up all night even in bed. He used to be a decent sleeper so I didnt see the need to sleep train him, but now I feel like its too late.

    • Danielle says

      Hi Brenda,
Thank you for using The Baby Sleep Site as a resource! I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with your 10 month-old’s sleep. Based on your description, it sounds like you’re probably dealing with the 10 month sleep regression, which is tough, but temporary. We have an article to help you here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-sleep-patterns/8-9-10-month-old-baby-sleep-regression/
The regression usually improves on its own within a couple of weeks, but if sleep doesn’t get better, it’s definitely not too late to sleep coach if you want to. We work with toddlers, preschoolers, and even children in kindergarten regularly, so at 10 months-old, you still have a lot of time to teach better sleep habits. Hang in there, and good luck!

  9. Monica says

During the day she’ll roll around with no problem back to belly and belly to back again but for some reason at night, she’ll flip onto her stomach and sleep for a long period of time before waking up to cry for help. Only when she’s in the crib is when she doesn’t roll herself back. I hate seeing her on her stomach. Just the thought of her head staying in that one position for hours just makes me want to go in and move her. i always put her on her back to sleep.

    • Debbye @ The Baby Sleep Site says

Hi Monica – Thanks for writing! We do understand! Keep practicing rolling during awake times and she will master it at night too – hopefully quickly! Some families will go and roll baby back over to their back at night during this time, and find that works well for them. Talking to your baby’s Doctor about your daughter’s specifics should help you decide how to handle too! Good luck with and congrats on your newly rolling baby!

  10. Adriana says

My son has the opposite problem! He loves sleeping on his belly and is rolling over onto his back in the middle of the night and waking himself up. I have to go in and roll him back onto his belly and pray that he falls back asleep.
    Any advice?

    • Janelle Reid says

@Adriana, I went through the same thing! Hang in there, it is a phase that will pass quickly (or as soon as he can flip back over from back to belly). Stay strong!
