Our son is 7 months old and he’s a very healthy, chunky little guy. He’s on a great nap/day feeding routine, but unfortunately I think I’ve made every sleep association mistake at night, so he’s still waking up every 1-3 hours at night. I work full-time and have a toddler, so in my exhaustion, I’ve been giving in at night and just letting him nurse whenever he wakes up. We are planning to start sleep training using CIO. We successfully used Ferber with our oldest, but the check-ins only ramp him up and do nothing to calm him, so we are thinking extinction might be a better choice. I am wondering, should I continue to feed him a little at night and slowly ween him off of those feedings? My husband and I were thinking that we can do a night feeding around 11pm (dinner is around 6pm, we start bedtime routine at 7pm with lights out at 7:30pm). If he wakes up after 11pm, my husband will get up to comfort him, but no feedings until wake up at 6:30am. If this goes well, we may eventually ween off the night feedings all together. Is that a good plan? I think I just need some reassurance. I hate listening to him cry, but if I know I’m doing the right thing, I’ll have more resolve.

      Hi Alt,
Thank you for writing! I’m sorry to hear you’re still struggling with sleep, but congratulations on making a plan! I know it can be hard to get over that hurdle when you’re so tired. At this age, most babies are still eating once or twice at night, usually in the later parts of the night, but it can depend on the baby and the daytime feeding schedule. I would encourage you to run your plan past your pediatrician, and then give it a try. You can always make adjustments to the method or schedule once it’s been a few days and you can see how you’re all doing. I hope this helps, and good luck!
