Although we’d all like to take credit for an easier baby who has the innate ability to self soothe, I do believe a lot of that is due to genetics. To force anything, including weaning, by crying it out when it feels like your child is really suffering is just a shame. I hope that people are able to read their babies and not take the immense amount of advice available these days too literally and without a grain of salt. Every baby is different and nobody knows your baby better than you, the mama. So, while the crying it out weaning method may work for a very, very small few, it certainly wouldn’t be a great method for everyone.

My first son did not take a pacifier and I was indeed his pacifier for awhile. He finally took to sucking on a light receiving blanket that is much easier to find than a pacifier. My 2nd son has done the same. I enjoyed not breaking a pacifier or thumb sucking habit too much the first time. 🙂

Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea to cry it out to wean. I wasn’t a big fan of crying it out to sleep even though we tried it with our first because we were so sleep deprived.

I also don’t think mom should become a human pacifier. We used pacifiers (or fingers) and I know some people don’t think that’s right for them, but when it works it works like a charm.
