Wonderful article, my 19-month-old has started having nightmares at 5 AM, and thanks to your article I think it’s caused by the heat turning on! Now it all makes sense…

@Saskia – Thank you for reading! We’re so glad our article helped you figure this out. Best of luck with kicking that early waking/nightmare now! 🙂

Im not sure how old these posts are but I am experiencing some sleep issues with my 3 1/2 month old.
She has been sleeping through the night at 2 months and is a champ when it comes to sleep. But occasionally she will be a sleep and I can tell by her face she is having a bad dream of some sort. Could be the confusional event she is having but to me it seems like a night terror. It goes from just a grimace on her face to full out scream (one that I never hear from her). She does it for about 2-3 mins then wakes and calms down. She will typically go back to sleep after and it typically happens about 30 mins to an hour before she goes completely down for the night. She is a formula baby. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not. It literally breaks my heart every time it happens and I wind up a crying mess too. If you have an advice to give I would love the input. She just seems way to young to be experiencing these in her sleep.

Hi @AmyKaye Young, thank you for writing to us. I am so sorry you’ve been experiencing these events with your little one! I know it is heartbreaking to see your precious baby struggling. As you likely read in the article, unfortunately there’s not a ton you can do to prevent them, but I know I’d still bring it up to her doctor when you get the chance. The other thing you may decide to google is the “moro” or “startle” reflex. My second son had a pretty bad startle reflex and it started showing itself around that age and went away I want to say around 6-9 months? (How quickly we forget.) It was similar to what you described, a blood curdling scream and a grimace on his face like you never want to see on a child. It’s not fun but thankfully it passes and they grow out of it. I know I didn’t give any answers, but I hope that helps! If anything give her doctor a call to hopefully provide you some peace of mind. Hang in there!

@ jill. Not sure how old this post is, but it sounds like I had the same issue as your daughter when I was young. Turns out my spots and zig zag and flashes of light were Ancephalgic migraines. I wasn’t diagnosed until about 8 years when the nausea and pain started to accompany them. Fortunately we found out it was triggered by certain foods. After trial and error, we discovered caffeine was the culprit. I never drank soda as a kid, but the occasional piece of chocolate was enough to trigger an event hours later.

@Jillian, thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! I am glad to hear you got to the root of the issue.
