Hi @Amy – Thanks for writing to us! You can certainly play around with your baby’s room environment, and add a little light to help naps be a little more flexible! If having a little light does not bother her, then it’s fine to change that! Some families will bring room darkening “tools” with them for travel or naps outside the home, so that’s an option too, if he does seem to nap better in a very dark room! Some families will travel with extra blankets to put across windows, or even a roll of tin foil to put up temporarily to block out the light! Find what works best for you! Good luck Amy!

Should we start to brighten his room so that he can sleep in an environment?

Hi Jenny

We take a roll of aluminium foil and pack of baby wipes with us whenever we travel; if you wipe down any windows with the wipes, the aluminium foil will temporarily stick to it which helps block out light!

Hi Jenny,
Thank you for using The Baby Sleep Site as a resource! If you’re in a hotel or someone else’s home, there may not be a great way to darken the room, but it’s usually worth trying to block the light if you can. I have personally taped a large black trash bag over the window and had decent success, and I’m sure there are other options. I hope this helps – good luck!

Hi Nikita,
You may want to check out the sample schedules for toddlers to see if your son is getting enough sleep and at the right times?

@Astrid Thank you for commenting and sharing darkening curtains helped!

@Lainie Yeah, for our younger son, we put a blanket up in his room. LOL! We have “real” blinds for the older child, but we didn’t think we’d need them the second time around and never bothered to order some. I still thought it was temporary and we did remove it only to put it back on so he’d sleep later on the weekends. 😉 It is common for 2 1/2 year olds to begin to need longer before bed to fall asleep. If she’s happy in there, I’d keep the nap longer and maybe just bump bedtime to 8:30 p.m. More play time might make her more tired for bed. It sounds like she’s doing great! I can’t believe she’s 2 1/2! I remember talking to you about her in the Helpdesk and I guess it was years ago, now! 🙂
