My 2 month old has been refusing to nurse or bottle fees between the hours of 1000am-0800pm. She would starts sucking but gets upset when she realizes there is milk coming out. But after she falls asleep at night, she takes the breast fine. She eats what she needs and goes back to sleep. Last night she had a total of 7 nursing session between the hours of 9pm-8 am but doesn’t nurse continually. When I nursed my son, he would still nurse during the day or take a bottle but would suck the breast all night long. This baby girl is so different. She worries me when she refuses to nurse or take a bottle during the day. Would you consider that reverse cycle too or something else might be going on?

      Hi Mimi,
Thank you for checking out The Baby Sleep Site! I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble with feeding your baby. We are not medical professionals and only work with sleep issues, but your baby’s feeding pattern doesn’t sound normal. Please check in with your pediatrician or lactation consultant, or Kelly Mom has a great resource page to help you find a lactation support helpline: https://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/breastfeeding-helplines/
I hope this helps! Good luck!

Thanks so much for the article. The information has really helped me understand my child’s needs. However, how can I change his association with the bottle? Do you think that offering it more instead of breast will help? My son is 6 months old today and has been waking 3 to 4 times a night since I returned to work at 10 weeks pp. He used to drink about 6 oz in a 14 hour time period but within the past 3 weeks has begun to refuse the bottle almost completely. He drinks about 2 oz when gone and will be angry (calm but no emotion or happy times) or fussy all day (not crying). My husband is having a very hard time and I don’t know what to do. I would also like my sleep back. Even just 5 hours straight would be helpful. I go to bed at 7-8pm daily. Wake up at 430am. Its rough. What else can I do?

Hi @Alyssia – Thanks for writing, and I’m sorry that your little guy has bee refusing the bottle feeds! You may want to check in with his doctor, to be sure that he is getting enough calories. Once you know that he is healthy and growing and eating enough, we have a wonderful team of sleep consultants that can help with his sleep and his feeding schedule, should you be interested in our help!
