Hi, I have an almost 4 year old. He hasn’t slept through the night basically ever. He refuses to sleep in his bed. He says he doesn’t want to be all alone. He wakes up too early ( like 3-4 am) and then naps very inconsistent. I’ve resorted to terrible habits letting him fall asleep on the couch with television so I can get some sleep or giving him half a children’s melatonin. I feel like I’ve tried everything.
Cry it out, white noise and cuddle in his bed, the one where I inch out of the room, putting him back and n his room every 2 minutes until he gets it. Nothing seems to work. It’s exhausting. We definitely need help over here.

Hi! My 3 year old started preschool a couple of months ago and we have certainly seen some interesting behaviors pop up since then (hello hitting and screaming). But this week she has become completely resistant to bedtime. She screams and cries terribly for an hour or more whether or not we go in. We even tried an earlier bedtime so that we could cuddle and wind down more slowly but it didn’t help. Is this when we just let her cry it out???

Hi @Ashley – Thank you for writing to us about your 3 year old! Sorry to hear that bedtime has become such a battle! You’re not alone! How you handle it will be up to you – you can work more gently towards her falling asleep on her own, and do keep a close eye out on her schedule, to make sure that wake time, nap or rest time, and bedtime are at good times for her. Sometimes being the right amount of tired at bedtime helps a lot! Here is a link:

Good luck Ashley, and please contact us if you need more help!

My 3 year old son has trouble getting to sleep at night. He often stays awake and in his bed long after his bedtime. He then wakes early. He usually has a nap during the day, but I’m afraid that the napping will be counterproductive for night time sleep. We have tried all of the remedies to help him sleep. What do we do?

Hi @Jen, thank you for writing. Can I start off by saying that I 100% get where you’re coming from! It is challenging. Here is a link that’s really helped me figure out what in the world to do with my 3 year old: https://www.babysleepsite.com/toddlers/toddler-done-napping-3-signs/
I will tell you from my personal experience, that sometimes my son still naps (falls asleep during his rest time), but most days he doesn’t and it’s made bedtime easier. If he sleeps I make sure to get him up a few hours before bedtime rolls around. I hope this helps but if he is still waking early or is extra cranky and you need more support, let us know! We are here and have a ton of resources that can help. Feel free to email us directly anytime at [email protected] and we can help you further.
      Hang in there!
