Now it all makes sense…

Hi @AmyKaye Young, thank you for writing to us. I am so sorry you’ve been experiencing these events with your little one! I know it is heartbreaking to see your precious baby struggling. As you likely read in the article, unfortunately there’s not a ton you can do to prevent them, but I know I’d still bring it up to her doctor when you get the chance. The other thing you may decide to google is the “moro” or “startle” reflex. My second son had a pretty bad startle reflex and it started showing itself around that age and went away I want to say around 6-9 months? (How quickly we forget.) It was similar to what you described, a blood curdling scream and a grimace on his face like you never want to see on a child. It’s not fun but thankfully it passes and they grow out of it. I know I didn’t give any answers, but I hope that helps! If anything give her doctor a call to hopefully provide you some peace of mind. Hang in there!

She has been sleeping through the night at 2 months and is a champ when it comes to sleep. But occasionally she will be a sleep and I can tell by her face she is having a bad dream of some sort. Could be the confusional event she is having but to me it seems like a night terror. It goes from just a grimace on her face to full out scream (one that I never hear from her). She does it for about 2-3 mins then wakes and calms down. She will typically go back to sleep after and it typically happens about 30 mins to an hour before she goes completely down for the night. She is a formula baby. I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not. It literally breaks my heart every time it happens and I wind up a crying mess too. If you have an advice to give I would love the input. She just seems way to young to be experiencing these in her sleep.

Not sure how old this post is, but it sounds like I had the same issue as your daughter when I was young. Turns out my spots and zig zag and flashes of light were Ancephalgic migraines. I wasn’t diagnosed until about 8 years when the nausea and pain started to accompany them. Fortunately we found out it was triggered by certain foods. After trial and error, we discovered caffeine was the culprit. I never drank soda as a kid, but the occasional piece of chocolate was enough to trigger an event hours later.

@Carola – I’m sure that witnessing your daughter’s night terrors had to be a bit alarming! I’m sorry to hear that she experienced them, but glad to hear you and your husband were able to find a trigger. Keeping my fingers crossed that she’s free and clear of them now! Thanks for sharing!

After experiencing several of them, my husband and I realized it always happens when she needs to pee. She always wakes up crying (with a terrified look) calling for me, so we take her to the bathroom and then stay with her singing softly and hugging her until she falls asleep.

Do you think there’s anything real behind her complaints of seeing spots? It may be worth a visit to an eye doctor, just to make sure all is fine there. Honestly, though, this is probably nothing. Could very well be a confusional event, in which she’s semi-awake but not fully awake.

Keep us posted on what happens, Jill! And thanks for commenting. 🙂

The past few months on occasions she tells me she has clovers in her eyes and is scared. She climbs in bed and tells her she is fine go back to bed. She then falls asleep in a few minutes. Last night she was up saying the same thing. It took me an hour to get her to go to sleep. She kept saying it over and over and said she was seeing spots, covering her eyes, holding her arms out to keep them away and looking constantly around the room. She seemed like she was truly awake and really scared. I held her and told her nothing was there but she insisted there was. Do you think this was a night terror?
