I have twin girls who are now 20 months and born 3 month’s prematurely. We actually started daycare day #3 today. My biggest concern is wether they are getting adequate nutrition. At home we feed on demand which actually is a routine they have developed. They developed a pattern wake up 6:30am and eat couple ounces. Then an hour later eat another couple ounces. Followed by next couple hours where they would eat another couple to three oz and go for a nap by noon for couple hours minus/plus half hr nap. They would drink formula I’d say about 4oz on average right before I start rocking them to sleep. They would then snack fruits after waking up and by 4pm and 7pm have 3oz meals. They would then drink 4oz average and be able to hold through the night till the morning. They get water 1 sippy cup throughout the day. Thai was at home. Now that they’re in daycare I’m not sure they are getting all these calories especially since they don’t eat a full breakfast at home and by the time they are in daycare (8am), they offer snack before lunch at 9am. No formula there or outside Food allowed. They get a snack, lunch and snack again. Ideally Get home at 6:30pm. But so far I’ve been picking them up before nap, after nap for one girl because she couldn’t fall asleep. Will see how today goes. They gotta adjust their portion feeds to a schedule or they wouldn’t have the calories in a day to hold them.

Hi @Esty, thank you for writing to us and sharing about your twins’ schedule. Here is a link to our sample schedule for toddlers which lays out snacks and meals the average toddler needs: https://www.babysleepsite.com/schedules/toddler-schedule/ As you mentioned, it may take some time to get them on a schedule so they eat more in one sitting since they are use to smaller portions, but with time they will likely adjust well – hopefully it will be quick and quite painless! The transition to daycare from home can be tough as well so hang in there! It will get better as they see what their new normal will be. I hope that helps!

I have 5 month old twins and they have always been feed on demand. they go through spurts where they eat more or less often but they have generally been sleeping without feeding through the night (bottle at 7pm next bottle at 6am) since 4 months. they naturally cluster feed i’ve noticed in the morning and eat less as the day goes on.

I always tried to get a little bit of a schedule. I have found that the longer my daughter goes between feeds the more she eats. I am able to get her to eat more this way and at 7 months she doesn’t eat at night but has a bottle of water at about 5 am after 9 hours sleep. It is true though that if they are able to get the needed calories during the day they will be less likely to eat at night, but some babies make a habit of it. Learning to sleep while hungry is a skill they learn…

Both! From 0 to 4 months, we stuck to a regular schedule. With reflux and all sorts of breastfeeding issues, a schedule worked best in his infancy. I agree with you that sleep was a secondary issue for feeding – there were other issues such as weight gain, latching, pumping etc. that were primary and a schedule helped us deliver consistent and adequate feeds. But now that he has grown, and moreover now that his parents have gained confidence(!), we are doing on demand at 6 months. It’s hard anyway to fit naps, changes, feeds, and now solids into an entire day! Besides, it’s more correct to say he is demanding and we supply whenever — he is determining things since play time is now higher priority in his mind.
