    Hi
My 4 month old son started waking up every 1-1.5 hours day and night about 3 weeks ago. His pediatrician has said he has reflux which we are treating with medications but only started last week.
On average he nurses for about 10 minutes then falls asleep at the breast. Due to his reflux i hold him upright for a bit before attempting to put him down in his crib (next to our bed).

We had a very hard time with nursing and his weight gain for the first 2 months. I was nursing and offering expressed milk in a bottle and pumping each meal ( at that stage he was closer to 8-12 meals total). I Hated pumping so I’m pleased to only do so when I leav le him for a few hours with a nanny. He drinks very well from a bottle and shocks me every time I leave that he needs so much milk!
I can not abide letting him cry but I have been trying to remove my nipple before he falls asleep as a first step towards gentle sleep training.

Thank you for any advice you can give for our son to sleep better at night will be greatly soootrcidksdeki

Hi @Michelle, thank you for writing to us. I’m sorry to hear your son has been struggling with reflux, but I’m glad that you’ve been able to identify the problem and treat it so hopefully things improve for you soon. At 4 months we commonly do see babies start to need more help to fall asleep during their sleep cycles as they hit the famous (and dreaded) 4 month sleep regression. As you mentioned, there are several gentle methods you can use to help him learn to fall asleep on his own. Here is a link to a free guide with tips to help your baby sleep through the night: https://www.babysleepsite.com/sleep-through-night-free-ebook/
Keep in mind that sleeping through the night at this age may still involve a few feedings, but now is a good time to help your baby learn how to connect his sleep cycles so you are not up every 2ish hours when he transitions sleep cycles and wants your help again to fall back asleep. If you need more help with this, we would love to walk you through this! Please feel free to contact us directly anytime at [email protected] and we can help point you in the direction of more resources from there. Hang in there!

Hi my 11 month old daughter has been a bad sleeper from day 1 but she goes thru spurts where she will sleep thru the night and take 2 hour naps and then stop. Right now this is the worst its been. She goes to bed at 7 and wakes up between 11 and 1 and takes hours to go back to sleep or doesn’t go back to sleep at all. I’m really not sure what’s going on. Also her naps r so bad! She never wants to nap and it takes me forever to get her to go down.once she goes to sleep it will only be a 30 to 40 mins nap.She will be exhausted and fights going to sleep. She kicks her legs and cries. Even at bedtime she keeps trying to sit up and tries everything to not go to sleep. I’ve been dealing with her not sleeping since the day she came home and she’s gonna be 1 on 3 weeks and I just don’t know how much more I can handle. I walk around looking like a zombie and this has been going on for almost a year now. She was a badly colic baby as an infant and never slept for 4 months. I just feel like its getting worse than better as she gets older. Please help!! Tyia!

Katie, this eerily echos what our family is dealing with. We even have a 4yo daughter who slept like a dream from the beginning. If you find something that works for you, please do share.

My 5 1/2 month old refuses to sleep. He eats at 7am, 11, 3, 6:45. He takes a morning nap for 30mins to 45 mins and a nap between 11:30 & 3 for 1.5-2 hrs. He goes to by at 7pm with no prob. At 10pm every night he wakes up and wants his pacifier. Then between 11pm-1:00am he is up every hour crying and if we pick him up he passes out. We have tried the cry it out method but he screams and won’t give up. The longest we let it go was 2.5 hrs. Lately I give up and let him sleep in our bed at 1:00am. He is now waking up at 3am and screams until we get out of bed and sit on the couch. He will either go to sleep or will be up for an hour. Then he’s up for the day between 5am and 6:30am. I can’t do this much longer without going crazy (not really)…I work full-time and so does my husband. Right now we alternate but he is on shift work and will be going on nights soon so it will fall all on me and I’m not sure i’ll be able to handle it. We have a 4 yr old who sleeps 11-12 hrs and has since she was 4 months old.

Hi my son is 11 months, for last 2.5 month he wakes up every night between 1-3am and its impossible to get him back to sleep, he doesn’t cry, doesn’t want to eat, not teething, nappy is changed, and it takes me 2-3h to put him back to sleep. Then he’s wrecked next day… Tried everything and it’s still the same…

    • Danielle says

      Hi Anna,
Thank you for your comment on The Baby Sleep Site! I’m so sorry to hear you’ve been dealing with these long night wakings for months! At this age, a long period of being awake at night, if it’s not a health issue, is almost always a scheduling issue. His naps may be too long, too short, or at the wrong times. We have a sample 11 month schedule that you can use to check on what your schedule looks like at home: https://www.babysleepsite.com/schedules/11-month-old-schedule/
If you do continue to have trouble, this is definitely the kind of situation one of our sleep consultants could help with as well: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-toddler-sleep-consulting-services/
      I hope this helps!

    hello,

My daughter use to sleep through the night but for the last few months she wakes up several times a night. Like every 2-3 hours i have (horrible) gotten into the habit of breast feeding a little and she falls a sleep at the nipple. Sometimes i can put her in the crib and she will sleep for another 1-2 hours but other time she wake right back up and ends up in our bed the rest of the night and it continues the off on sleep and feed until morning.

Any tips on getting her to sleep without having to fall asleep on the nipple and to stay sleep in her crib..?

    thanx.

  8. Chelsea Clementi says

Hi! My daughter slept through the night from 3-4 months (12hrs) then from 4-6 months wants to be awake from 3-5am to play. She doesn’t want to eat much while she is awake but seems to think 3am is her morning wake up time. She’s not crying too much during this time for the first hour but just playing and making noise. I typically will give her a bottle after an hour and she may drink 3-4oz and I’ll put her back in bed but she still doesn’t fall back asleep for another hour. It seems like she’s practicing her skills (starting to sit up and crawl around) but this is happening from 3-5 every night now. What do I do?

    • Danielle says

      Hi Chelsea,
Thank you for visiting The Baby Sleep Site! I’m sorry to hear you’re dealing with such a long night wake-up, every night. Some babies do start waking up more often when they’re practicing a new skill, but it’s usually temporary. Based on your description, it sounds more like there’s something wrong with your daytime nap or bedtime schedule. You may want to look at our sample 6 month-old schedule here and compare yours: https://www.babysleepsite.com/schedules/6-month-old-baby-schedule/
Unfortunately, there are so many different reasons that babies this age wake at night that, if it’s not the schedule, I would recommend considering a sleep consultation package with a trained sleep consultant. She can look at your daughter’s sleep history, current sleep and feeding schedules, and make a plan based on what exactly your daughter is doing now. You can see more on our packages here: https://www.babysleepsite.com/baby-toddler-sleep-consulting-services/
      Good luck with everything!

    Hi,
My son is just over 6 months and constantly wakes up. He is such a restless sleeper and wakes up rubbing his head/face/eyes. We used to swaddle but he really hates it so we stopped. He will fall asleep in my arms but as soon as I go to put him down he wakes up. We have tried everything to get him to sleep more soundly. Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Here is a link to a free guide we have available with tips to help your baby sleep through the night. Hi,
My son is almost 5 months old and has been breaking free of his swaddle and rubbing his face/waking himself almost hourly throughout the night. Once he does this, he gets upset and starts crying. Any suggestions? I am sure its time to stop swaddling, but he is the most restless sleeper!
    Thank you.
